Happy HolyDays - Advent 2016

Some feel we’re experiencing a “war on Christmas” when people say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” The fear is we’re taking Christ out of Christmas and secularizing the season, but the word “holiday” is the Old English word for “Holy-day.” Originally a holiday was a religious festival set aside for Sabbath. So maybe saying “Happy Holidays” is a celebration of a season of Holy Days. It’s not secularizing the season, but rather acknowledging the Holy Presence among us in the Christ child.

This Advent and Christmas, we are reclaiming the Holy in the Holidays. Through worship on Sundays and other special services, we will celebrate God’s “hallowing” of our everyday by coming to dwell among us. Along with worship, each week you will receive a list of things you can do to experience the Holy in the Holidays.

Support Our College Students

This time of year always brings the warm smell of pumpkin spice, the taste of good food, and for some the feeling of anxiety due to college exams. We are looking for a few adults who would like to help ease the stress for our college students by putting together care packages. This is an easy way you can help our young people, whom we may not regularly see on Sunday, know they are loved by their church family. If you are interested in serving our faith community in this way, please contact Austin Hubbard @ ahubbard@fumclr.org.more...
