FUMC Music Ministry Invited to Carnegie Hall

Distinguished Concerts International New York City (DCINY) announced that FUMC’s Music Ministry has been invited to participate in a performance of Mark Hayes’ Spirit Suite 1 and 2 as well as the Carnegie Hall Premiere of his newest piece, Spirit Suite 3, on the DCINY Concert Series in New York City. This performance is planned to take place on Sunday, June 17, 2018 in Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. FUMC musicians will join with other choristers to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International, a choir of distinction. DCINY Guest Conductors, Kevin McBeth and Andy Waggoner will serve as conductors of the performance and clinicians for the residency.

Dr. Jonathan Griffith, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for DCINY states: “The Choir Program at FUMC-Little Rock received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the personal recommendation of Kevin McBeth, who we’ve worked with in the past at DCINY. It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in New York. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.”

Our choirs will spend 5 days and 4 nights in New York City in preparation for their concert. “The singers will spend approximately 9-10 hours in rehearsals over the 5 day residency.” says Griffith. “Not all of the time is spent in rehearsals, since there is so much history and culture to see in New York City. However, the performance is the primary purpose for their visit to the city.”  In the coming months, First Church will be asked to support this wonderful opportunity.  If you would like more information or if you are interested in joining the music ministry, contact Kyle Linson (klinson@fumclr.org).

FirstArts Registration now Open!

Registration for the Winter/Spring Semester of FirstArts is open now through February 1 on our church's website http://www.fumclr.org/registrations/ Classes & lessons start on February 2 and 4, 2016.   First United Methodist Church has a 12-week afterschool music/arts instructional program called FirstArts that offers private lessons in Piano, Voice, Organ, Saxophone, and Guitar, as well as a Group Art Class. Our lessons and classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the end of the 12 week period, the students put on an Art Show and Recital to show what they have learned.     This program is more than just music. First Church has become known as a "safe place" for kids  to be socially aware of each other. The kids that walk our hallways on Tuesdays and Thursdays come from various backgrounds: different social and economic backgrounds, diverse family life (single parent households, gay parents, bi-racial parents), different ages, and different learning challenges. Our FirstArts families have become part of the First Church family. They might not become church members or visit on Sundays, but some have become Easter and Christmas visitors or come to a special program, yet they truly feel the love and safety of our church during the week.   This past Fall Semester, we had 15 single parent families that needed help covering the cost of their child's tuition. FirstArts is a self-sufficient budgetary program, so any money taken in goes towards payment to our teachers. Private lessons are $285, for twelve 30 minute lessons, as well as adult supervision before and after their lesson; the Group Art Class is $100 for twelve 1 hour group art classes, which includes all of their art supplies and adult supervision before and after their lesson. more...
