Thriving in the City - Kids Summer Activities

For several years now, FUMC’s Kids@First  has been known for its summer camps. Parents begin calling as early as October, and camps fill up within a few days or weeks of opening our registrations. Children from all over come to join us, and this year will be no different, except we are taking a different direction as we jump into summer. Embracing our new THRIVE vision, making Little Rock a place where children thrive, we are switching it up! Instead of providing a traditional daycare camp experience, we are reaching out in a variety of ways to positively impact children’s lives. EVERY Sunday morning during our Sunday School time, we will have VBS CAMP for Toddlers through Tweens! Our summer vacation Bible school is entitled VBS Unleashed, and we will pull out the stops through Bible stories, games, projects and of course snacks! We are blessed to have Anna Grace Clark return from college to serve as our VBS Assembly Leader and all round kid encourager this summer! If you would like to help on a Sunday or two, whether teaching or providing a snack, please let us know. During the week of July 18th – 22nd, we are proud to be a sponsor for Little Rocks’ first Friendship Camp! The camp is being brought to Little Rock by the Interfaith Center and Local Faith Organizations. This new camp is a week-long day camp offered to rising 3rd- 5th grade children. The camp’s focus is building friendships and understanding with children across diverse faith traditions in the Central Arkansas regions. Camp costs are $55 per child, $45 for second child in family. Scholarships are available. This is a very rich educational experience; so if you are interested, contact me as soon as possible as there will be a balance of children and the faiths they represent in the camp. Our annual Bible Boot Camp rounds out our summer camp experience as we take our 3rd-4th graders to Camp Tanako in Hot Springs, Arkansas for an overnight Bible camp experience that draws children from all the Central District churches in the Arkansas Conference. There will be campfires, worship, overnight cabin fun, Bible workshops, large and small group indoor and outdoor activities all while making new friends. Children who participate in connectional events of the UMC benefit from these  connections as they will likely know these new friends through college. We are a connectional church, so come and begin to connect with us in August! Parents are encouraged to come along as chaperones, and the parents always say how much they love this particular camp! Registration is now open at www.fumclr.org/registrations Overjoyed with the possibilities…we invite you to find a way to be a part of our summer! Winter Food Drive

In our Tween Sunday school class, we talk constantly about how to serve and help others. One of our students, age 11, asked if we as a church, could help him with his school project. As the discussion continued, he explained that he himself chose to do a food drive; and I witnessed his sincere desire to feed the hungry as best he can as a 5th grader. I was totally compelled to support his growth as a disciple, so these are his words asking for your help: "My name is Thomas Lu and I am having a food drive for a school project. There will be donation sites in front of the chapel, by the Cross and Flame Cafe, and by the sanctuary. The food will go to the Arkansas Food Bank. The collection boxes will be out from January 24 to February 7. Please make a donation and help me feed the hungry." As for me, I will be shopping for a few cases of food for this child, whom we as a church baptized and are humbly teaching how to live as God intended.  more...
